Romanian Prime Minister: Military pensions are not special pensions, but service pensions

Published on

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca declared on Friday, in Baia Mare, that the Government’s representatives will continue to reach out to the European Commission to support the idea that military pensions belong to the category of service pensions and that they are not special pensions, according to Agerpres.

The head of the Government recalled, in this context, the fact that the World Bank also supports this aspect, given that these pensions are calculated on a contributory basis.

„As far as military pensions are concerned, we also discussed this aspect, including with representatives of the (European) Commission, on a technical visit in Bucharest (…) We discussed the report presented by the World Bank, in the content of which is written very clearly that military pensions do not belong to the chapter of special pensions, but to the chapter of service pensions. Military pensions have been amended by law and are based on contributions, and at our level we continue to support reform of the contributory pension system, and in the steps we will take in the future with the European Commission we aim to reach a very clear understanding in accordance with the principles that the other states in the European Union also respect vis-ŕ-vis military pensions, according to which these are not special pensions, but service pensions,” declared Nicolae Ciuca, who was on a visit to Maramures County.

Prime Minister Ciuca’s statements come in the context in which sources from the EU executive indicated, on Friday, that a special milestone, whose deadline is the end of this year, is related to the revision of special pensions, which also include military pensions.
