Published on

Romania’s coal production exceeded 1.26 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first eight months of this year, representing a 0.2% decrease (down by 2,300 toe) compared with the same period in 2024, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Coal imports during the mentioned period amounted to 64,300 toe, down by 67,800 toe (51.3% lower) compared with the January-August 2024 period.

Both coal production and imports are projected to continue declining until 2027, as new energy production capacities come online. According to the latest Energy Balance Forecast published by the National Strategy and Prognosis Commission (CNSP), production is expected to decrease 11.4%, while imports will drop 24.5%.

Thus, according to the CNSP, coal production is estimated at 1.718 million toe for 2025 (down 10.5%), 1.555 million toe for 2026 (down 9.5%), and 1.432 million toe for 2027 (down 7.9%).

Imports are projected to fall by 20.5% in 2025, to 164,000 toe; by 26.3% in 2026, to 121,000 toe; and by 34.4% in 2027, to 79,000 toe. AGERPRES
