Romania’s future depends on digitization, sustainable and safe integration of new technologies (Senate’s head Ciuca)

Published on

The president of the Senate, Nicolae Ciuca, stated, on Tuesday, at the Digital Innovation Summit Bucharest 2024, that, this year, which is an electoral year at the global level, the „battle” will be fought between democracy and authoritarianism, and democracy must also be defended on the digital „battlefield”.

„I am convinced that, through such events, with a wide audience and international impact, Romania contributes to the global debate about digitalization and the future of emerging digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence. We live in a context where the future of Romania depends on digitalization and sustainable integration and the security of new technologies. I thought we knew almost everything about war, but life has shown me that there are many new things to learn. The struggle for democracy is on several levels – military, economic, and one that we are talking about today – the technological one. I believe that part of our duty is to protect not only the homeland and the freedom of the Romanians, but also to protect them from manipulation and misinformation,” Ciuca pointed out.

He mentioned that, since 2007, with the cyber attacks on Estonia, he understood that the world was entering „another security paradigm”, within which „interconnectivity is both desirable and inevitable, but also a source of vulnerabilities and challenges.”

The president of the Senate stated that he sees the next 10 years as a ‘decade of safety’, in which investment in innovation and technology must be part of the new country project for Romania.
