Romania’s industrial production drops 2pct as gross series Jan.-Aug.

Romania’s industrial production recorded a decrease of 2%, as a gross series, in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2023, respectively 1.4% as adjusted series, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released on Monday.

According to the quoted source, between January 1 and August 31, 2024, as a gross series, reductions in activity were reported in three industrial sectors: production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-5.5%), manufacturing (-1.6%) and mining (-0.6%).

At the same time, as a series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, in the same period of analysis, the decrease in industrial production was determined by the results in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning supply (-5.9%), manufacturing (-1%) and mining and quarrying (-0.5%).

INS data reveal that, in August this year, industrial production (gross series) decreased 12.8% compared to the previous month, due to manufacturing industry (-14.3%), production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-7.8%) and mining and quarrying (-1.2%).

At the same time, as an adjusted series, there was a 1.1% month-on-month increase in industrial production, due to manufacturing activities (+1.7%). On the other hand, production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning, and mining and quarrying fell 4.5% and 1.2% respectively.

Compared to August 2023, in August 2024, industrial production (gross series) dropped 4.3%, due to declines in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning supply (-5%), manufacturing (-4.5%) and mining and quarrying (-0.4%).

As an adjusted series, the decline in industrial production was 2%, as a result of decreases in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-4.7%) and manufacturing (-2%). On the other hand, mining and quarrying remained at the same level in August this year compared to the same month last year.
