Romania’s resident population stood at 21,671,500 people as of 1 July 2025, down 0.5% compared with 1 July 2024, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the source, the urban resident population was 11,992,700 people, down 1% from 1 July 2024. The rural resident population was 9,678,800 people, up 0.1% compared with the same date of the previous year.

The female population totalled 11,103,200 as of 1 July 2025, a decrease of over 51,900 compared with the same date in 2024. The male population stood at 10,568,300, down by over 55,600 year on year.

INS notes that the ageing process of the population continued to accelerate compared with 1 July 2024, with the share of elderly people (aged 65 and over) rising by 0.3 percentage points and the share of young people (aged 0-14) decreasing by 0.3 percentage points.

The demographic ageing index increased from 130.2 (as of 1 July 2024) to 135.4 elderly people per 100 young people (as of 1 July 2025). The average age of the population was 43.1 years, 0.4 years higher than a year earlier, while the median age was 44.0 years, up by 0.5 years compared with 1 July 2024.

As of 1 July 2025, the largest share of the total population was held by the 45-49 age group (8.6%). Among men, this age group accounted for 9%, while among women it represented 8.3%. The share of children aged 0-4 was 4%, lower than that of the 5-9 age group (5%) and the 10-14 age group (4.8%). AGERPRES
