Romania’s resident population increases by 9,900 people on January 1, 2024

Romania’s resident population increased by 9,900 people on January 1, 2024, compared to the beginning of the previous year, and reached 19,064,409 people, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

INS data reveal that, during the assessed period, the urban and female populations are in the majority (51.9% and 51.4% respectively).

At the same time, the phenomenon of demographic ageing is still accentuated, with a rate of 123.8 elderly people for every 100 young people under 15 years of age.

The gap between the elderly population aged 65 and over and the young population aged 0-14 reached 736,000 people (3.822 million compared to 3.086 million), up from 669,000 on January 1, 2023.

Also, the demographic dependency ratio has increased from 56 to 56.8 young and elderly people per hundred adults.

In addition, the balance of long-term temporary international migration was positive at 81,988 persons.

During 2023, women were in the majority among emigrants (52.4%), while in the category of immigrants, men were the most numerous (57.4%).

The resident population includes all persons (Romanian, foreign or without citizenship) who have their usual residence in Romania for at least 12 months.
