Romania’s total motorway length at less than 1,000 km as of end-2023

At the end of 2023, Romania’s public road network totaled 86,388 km, of which 17,677 km (20.4 percent) were national roads, 35,046 km (40.6 percent) were county roads, and 33,665 km (39.0 percent) were communal roads, shows data released on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

As of end-2023, the length of Romania’s motorways had increased by 48 km to a total of 997 km.

By the pavement type, the structure of the public road network was as follows: 49.4 percent (42,692 km) were upgraded roads (94.2 percent of which were covered in heavy- and medium-duty asphalt), 23.9 percent (20,671 km) were covered in lightweight coatings, and 26.7 percent (23,025 km) were cobbled and dirt roads.

As far as the technical state of the public roads is concerned, 27.5 percent of the length of upgraded roads, and 39.4 percent of the length of roads in lightweight coating had exceeded their service life.

Of the total length of national roads, 6,189 km (35.0 percent) were international roads, 997 km (5.6 percent) were motorways, and 70 km (0.4 percent) were express roads; by the number of traffic lanes 2,161 km (12.2 percent) were four-lane roads, 311 km (1.8 percent) were three-lane roads, and 37 km (0.2 percent) were six-lane roads.

Also, modernized roads accounted for 51.5 percent of the total length of county roads, and 35.1 percent of the communal roads were cobbled thoroughfares.

As of December 31, 2023, there were 10,611 km of railway in public use, of which 10,515 km (99.1 percent) standard-gauge lines, 91 km (0.9 percent) wide-gauge lines, and 5 km narrow-gauge lines.
