French President Emmanuel Macron condemned on Wednesday the new Russian airstrike involving missiles and drones carried out last night against Ukraine, stating that Russia will have to pay for its aggression in Ukraine and promising to increase pressure to ensure this happens, according to the EFE news agency.
"This policy of terror, carried out through missile and drone strikes, is unacceptable," Macron wrote on the social media platform X, reacting to the Russian bombardment in which at least 17 people were killed and 44 wounded in the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Tuesday night into Wednesday.
"Every new attack reinforces one thing: Russia must pay the price for its aggression and be held accountable for its crimes," the French president added.
He insisted that, “together with Ukraine, we will not give in to either fatigue or intimidation,” and announced that “the European Union and its partners will continue to increase pressure on Russia, particularly through new sanctions and by strengthening military support for Ukraine, so that it can defend itself and protect its population.”
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, its attack targeted logistics centers “used for the storage and supply of weapons, as well as for the production and distribution of drones.”
The attack came one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced new drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, as part of the 40-day campaign he announced on June 25, which primarily targets Russian logistics centers and refineries.
Since then, the Ukrainian military has attacked approximately 20 warehouses belonging to the Russian e-commerce company Wildberries, another 25 refineries and energy infrastructure facilities, and approximately 200 oil tankers and commercial vessels in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In retaliation, Russia launched 381 missiles at Ukraine in July alone—more than in any other month since the start of the war it launched in February 2022. Russia is also carrying out sustained missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian ports to prevent Ukraine from exporting its products—particularly grain—after Russian exports were in turn disrupted by Ukrainian drone strikes on port infrastructure.
