Russia produces first nuclear warheads for Poseidon super torpedo

Published on

The official TASS news agency announced on Monday that Russia has produced the first nuclear charges for the Poseidon super-torpedoes that will be equipped with the Belgorod nuclear submarine, Reuters reports, Agerpres reads.

„The first loads of Poseidon ammunition have been manufactured, and the Belgorod submarine will receive them in the near future,” said a military source whose identity was not disclosed by TASS.

Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced the new Poseidon torpedo in 2018, claiming it was a fundamentally new type of strategic nuclear weapon with an atomic propulsion source.

In his speech at the time, the Kremlin leader showed that the torpedo will have an unlimited range and will be able to operate at extreme depths, with a speed several times higher than that of any submarine and any other torpedo.

The new weapons „have a very low noise level, very high maneuverability and are practically indestructible by the enemy. Today there is no weapon in the world that can counter them,” he said.
