Russia says United States has cut off strategic stability talks

Published on

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that the United States has stopped talks with Russia regarding the strategic dialogue and that relations between Washington and Moscow will not be the same as before, Reuters reports, Agerpres reads.

Representatives of the two countries were due to meet in Cairo last November to discuss resuming inspections under the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty, before the treaties were canceled at the last minute. Moscow has accused Washington of refusing to discuss a broader „strategic stability” agenda between the world’s two biggest nuclear powers.

In his first press conference this year to take stock of 2022 and set goals for the current year, Lavrov also said former US President Barack Obama was to blame for starting a diplomatic row after he expelled 35 Russian diplomats in following information on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US elections.

The head of Russian diplomacy compared the US policy towards Russia with the actions of Adolf Hitler against the USSR. „Just like Hitler, who wanted to solve the ‘Jewish question’ once and for all, now Western politicians (…) are talking about the need for a strategic defeat of Russia,” said the Russian minister, quoted by EFE.

According to Lavrov, Washington is currently trying to mobilize Europe to solve the „Russian problem”. „The Americans have created a coalition made up of practically all European countries, which are part of NATO and the European Union, and through Ukraine they are waging a war against our country with the same goal, the definitive solution to the Russian problem,” he said.

The Russian foreign minister declared that „one day this war will end” and that Russia will „defend its truth”. ”But, for the moment, I cannot imagine how we shall live after that; everything will depend on the conclusions that Europe will draw”, he added.
