The acting president of the Senate, Alina-Stefania Gorghiu, requested, at the meeting with the ambassador of the United States of America, Kathleen Ann Kavalec, the support of the American Congress regarding the inclusion of Romania in the Visa Waiver Program, recalling that this objective represents a priority on the bilateral agenda, with particular importance for Romanian citizens, the Senate informs in a release sent to Agerpres.
Gorghiu pleaded for the need to continue and intensify the cooperation of the US Embassy in Bucharest with the Government of Romania in joint efforts to reduce the visa refusal rate, especially in the context of the public campaign initiative to inform Romanians about the procedures for obtaining visas.
The acting president of the Senate emphasized the strategic importance of Romania as the main security provider on NATO’s eastern flank, as well as a pillar of regional stability, especially against the backdrop of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Gorghiu welcomed the Romanian-American cooperation in the energy field, mentioning the importance of new technologies for ensuring Romania’s energy security and independence. At the same time, the need for a stable fiscal framework to facilitate foreign direct investments in Romania was highlighted.
Alina Gorghiu emphasized the importance of continuing the support offered to the Republic of Moldova, both politically, economically and energetically, in order to successfully overcome the situation created by the conflict in Ukraine and maintain a pro-European course, while the high-ranking American official congratulated the Romanian state for the exemplary way in which it received the Ukrainian refugees. The discussions also revealed the importance of gender equality at the political decision-making level, as well as the need to adopt measures to increase the degree of participation of women in the political exercise. In this sense, the discussions focused on the stage of the legislative initiative regarding the introduction of a minimum quota for the representation of women and men in Parliament, the release also says.
