The National Liberal Party (PNL) Senate floor leader Daniel Fenechiu believes that any difficulty of a country affects its foreign policy, and it is up to Romanian politicians and diplomats to explain.
Asked if Romania’s current internal political context – a voided presidential election and an interim president – makes the task of Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu difficult, Fenechiu said: „This is a problem of analysis of foreign policy analysts. Certainly, when a country has any kind of difficulty, the difficulties leave their mark on its foreign policy.”
„In an extremely inflamed international context, I think there are other things that are shiny, and then we are very attentive to certain specific things that attract attention. Mr. Hurezeanu is a man who is well trained professionally; he is a man with a very good openness in the diplomatic environment, and I and my party colleagues believe that Mr Hurezeanu is doing what he has to do. We cannot mistake the possibility of Mr Hurezeanu’s manifestation with the possibility of manifestation of the Ukrainian, American (…) or French foreign ministers who are at the heart of some communications of interests,” Fenechiu said on Tuesday at the Senate.
According to him, any discussions between the prime minister and the foreign minister are „welcome and usual.”
„I think it is normal for the head of the government to be concerned about certain things, especially in the context in which both Romania’s situation is what it is, and the international situation is inflamed and it is possible that in the future we will probably see a different type of reaction from the officials with a say in the area of foreign policy. It is a delicate area and I think it is very good to be cautious. Probably anyone who would like Romania’s role in the foreign affairs area to be an extremely important one, everyone should ask us. But, unfortunately, our geopolitical position, the greatness of our state, our strength in the international concern do not raise us to the problem of playing first fiddle in international politics.”
Asked if Hurezeanu still has the backing of PNL, Fenechiu replied: „Certainly, so! If there had been any discussion in this sense, I would have known.”
„Any portfolio of this kind requires a period, and not so much adaptation from the perspective of Mr Hurezeanu, who has an experience as an ambassador to Austria, to Germany, is well received in Western chancelleries. Until certain things start to work, a while passes, and this time, unfortunately, overlaps an interesting global situation in which, only if you think about the statements of American officials and the reaction of Europe, you give yourself some answers. (…) Do not live with the impression that someone is extremely pleased with the fact that there can be a lot of speculation, that we have an interim president, that we have voided an election. These are things, in fact, that politicians and those in diplomacy have to explain, with more or less credibility. They can get some kind of support. There are European officials who support the decision that was taken in Romania. There are American officials who question the reason for this decision, but there are some things that are natural in the world. I mean, not everyone can love you, there are all kinds of interests in this area and, then, it is quite normal to react in relation to the daily factual situation,” said the senator.
