Seven migrants from Sri Lanka were discovered, on the night of Thursday to Friday, hidden in cardboard boxes transported by a van, checked at the western Nadlac II Border Crossing Point before leaving the country, towards Hungary, the Arad Border Police informed on Friday.

„A 21-year-old Romanian citizen presented himself for border formalities on his way out of the country. The young man was driving a van registered in Romania and was transporting, according to the documents accompanying the goods, car parts packed in cardboard boxes, on the Romania-Hungary route. Based on the risk profile, a thorough control of the means of transport was carried out, as a result of which the border police discovered, in the cardboard boxes in the cargo compartment, but also in a specially arranged place in the ceiling of the van cabin, seven foreign citizens,” the source says.

Following the check, it was determined that the migrants, aged from 28 to 44 years old, are citizens of Sri Lanka and that they have entered Romania legally.

The driver is being investigated for migrant trafficking, while the foreigners are being investigated for attempting to fraudulently cross the state border.
