A Romanian truck driver is under criminal investigation after allegedly trying to smuggle 14 migrants from several countries out of the country, the Arad Police informed Tuesday.

The 14 persons were found hidden in the corn transported by the vehicle on the Romania – Italy route.

The truck was checked upon exiting the country through the Nadlac Border Crossing Point.

„A detailed control of the means of transportation was carried out, following which the border police discovered, in the compartment intended for the transport of goods, 14 foreign citizens stashing in the corn,” the Arad Border Police said.

After checks, the police found that the migrants are from Tunisia, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, aged between 21 and 39 years, and that they had entered Romania legally.

The Romanian driver is being investigated for migrant trafficking, while the foreigners – for attempting to fraudulently cross the state border.
