Social Democratic Party (PSD) interim Chairman Sorin Grindeanu rejected on Wednesday the possibility of the Social Democrats forming a government with the Alliance for Romanians’ Union (AUR), saying that the current government will ‘make it to March 2027,’ as outlined in the coalition protocol.
Asked on Antena 3 CNN private television broadcaster whether there is a scenario in which PSD might form a government with AUR if disagreements arise within the coalition, Grindeanu said: ‘Short answer: no.’
‘I’ll elaborate. The fact that in recent months we’ve had nothing but these, let’s say, semi-apocalyptic speeches may be one of the causes that led AUR to this 40% score. That’s why I said it’s time that, alongside restructuring measures related to central administration and other necessary matters, we also come forward with solutions like economic relaunch projects. These things must be done with sound arguments,’ Grindeanu added.
He gave as a good example the simple motion against the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, which was rejected in the Chamber of Deputies.
According to Grindeanu, the Environment Minister is ‘a committed environmentalist,’ but she understood PSD’s arguments regarding the fact that the governing programme includes the requirement that four hydroelectric plants must enter a rapid approval process for environmental permits, without changing her core principles.
‘On the other side, all I’ve seen from AUR’s position is a show (…). That’s the difference between actually doing things and just jumping on topics to perform opposition live on TikTok,’ Grindeanu added.
Asked whether this government will make it to the New Year, Grindeanu said: ‘We’ll make it to March 2027 – that’s what the protocol says,’ showing that the protocol is among parties not certain people in these parties.
He further stressed that he is convinced all forces in the coalition have understood that the PSD’s points of view, as the main parliamentary party, cannot be ignored. AGERPRES
