PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu believes a majority cannot be formed in a future Cabinet without the Social Democrats, because that is parliamentary arithmetic.
Asked at the end of a meeting of the PSD parliamentary groups how he sees the option of a minority government made up of the PNL, USR and UDMR, Grindeanu replied: “And who would vote for it?”
“The Social Democratic Party is allowed to decide for the Social Democratic Party. Am I allowed? At the moment, representatives of the PNL come to me and say: ‘Come on, let’s vote for a PNL minority government.’ I do not agree. With what votes would it pass? At this point, in Parliament, we have, if you will, an almost even split into three forces, let’s say, three large political groups. On one side PSD, on the other PNL, USR and UDMR. And, on the other side, the sovereigntist group. There is no other way to form majorities. There is no way! (…) At the moment, a majority can be formed by reconstituting the former coalition, and we get to more than 300 votes. Logically. But neither PNL-USR can form a majority without PSD, right? Nor can PSD, if we exclude the others, form a majority without PNL-USR. You have never heard that from me; you have heard it from the others – that they no longer make majorities with PSD. But with whom do they make them?” the PSD leader stressed.
Regarding a government with AUR, he said he was not responsible for such a thing: “That is not my job. I am responsible for the 128 votes of the Social Democratic Party. Sorin Grindeanu is not the designated prime minister; the designated prime minister is Adrian Veștea, and he must present a majority in Parliament. If PSD decides to enter this team, then I, Sorin Grindeanu, as PSD president, am responsible for the PSD vote.”
Grindeanu pointed out that the Social Democrats are interested in ensuring that the government programme includes and implements solutions regarding Romanians’ lives and incomes, as well as investments.
“We are interested in a few things that this time must be very clearly written into the government programme, and the designated prime minister must convince us that they are not only written there, but that they will also happen. First of all, I am referring to Romanians’ incomes and to everything that means Romanians’ lives, which must not decline. Secondly, I am referring to local investments and national investments. These are things that, if you like, we can develop from motorways to hospitals, and these are matters we need to discuss point by point, project by project, if PSD decides to enter this partnership. (…) A whole team is working at the moment and will submit some of these proposals; part of them have already been submitted. If they find an echo and are taken up by designated prime minister Adrian Veștea, then, of course, this will count in the decisions PSD will take in the coming days,” the PSD leader explained.
He reiterated that the Social Democratic Party must now debate the matter in its internal fora: “At the Social Democratic Party, we make decisions democratically. We need to consult each other.”
UDMR president Kelemen Hunor said on Wednesday that he had discussed minority government options with PNL and USR leaders, one of them being PNL-USR-UDMR. He said that, for the Union, the first option is to reconstitute the coalition. In his view, another option is a minority PSD Cabinet, with a PSD prime minister.
