Speaker Suciu: Chamber will discuss bill on military pensions at plenary session on Tuesday

Published on

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Daniel Suciu said on Monday that a bill on military pensions will feature on the agenda of a plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday for debate and a vote.

„We have convened the second meeting of the Standing Bureau today precisely to prove that we have never opposed that bill on the state pensions of the military. I received the government’s point of view at the Chamber of Deputies. We will distribute in an emergency procedure to the two committees – budget-finance and defence – the bill together with the government’s point of view. Until tomorrow morning – deadline for submitting amendments, and I hope and believe that the two committees will meet tomorrow either before the plenary session or at the same time with the plenary, so that tomorrow we will have that bill on the agenda and a final voting session,” Suciu said at the House of Parliament.

He added that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) MPs will vote for this bill.

„I said from the very beginning that such a bill is not made in the electoral campaign, that’s why I looked with regret and with some annoyance at the way in which the National Liberal Party [PNL, PSD’s partners in the ruling coalition] tried to campaign on the bill. (…) The government’s point of view also contains the points of view of some ministries involved and – the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior – but in order to show that we have not been for a second against the military pensioners who have been disadvantaged in recent years, we will vote for this bill in its form. If necessary, there will be changes in form and not in substance, and we will make them. The substance remains the same and we will iron out the inequities in this system regarding military pensions. The bill will feature put on the agenda of the Chamber of Deputies, it will be voted on by all PSD MPs without whom this bill could not pass, and later it will be sent for promulgation to the President of Romania,” Suciu said.
