Sulina Free Zone Administration seeking funding for green port development project

Published on

The Sulina Free Zone Administration is seeking funding for the next stage of the projects for the development of a green port that uses unconventional energy, but also offers large-capacity maritime vessels the possibility to carry out port operations, so as to provide a sustainable alternative to the transport of goods from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine to African, Middle East and Asian markets.

The first projects for the upgrading of the port infrastructure under the management of the Sulina Free Zone Administration were made public in 2020, with the total budget of the initiative announced at the time standing at about 17 million euros.

Tudor Hubati, deputy general director of the Sulina Free Zone Administration, told AGERPRES that the projects being developed in two perimeters are 90% and 70% complete, respectively, and will be finalized by the end of this year.

Also, the feasibility study for the second stage of the project has been carried out and the Sulina Free Zone Administration is seeking financing for its implementation and for the rehabilitation of the heritage buildings under its jurisdiction, including the office of British civil engineer Charles Hartley (1825 – 1915), who served as engineer-in-chief for the works carried out by the European Commission of the Danube for improving the navigation at the mouths of the river.

„They are part of the old headquarters of the European Danube Commission. These are buildings with a very important history for the community, and therefore their rehabilitation must be done by competent, authorized factors and with substantial funding. We have managed to finalize the feasibility study and the first part of the design and are waiting for the opening of the financing line for such sites,” Tudor Hubati specified.

According to him, the „green” port that will be built on the area managed by the Sulina Free Zone Administration could have both a photovoltaic park and active hydrogen stations.

Last week, the Tulcea City Council approved two draft orders regarding the updating of the economic indicators of the investments carried out by the Sulina Free Zone Administration, the total value of the relevant projects being of over RON 267 million.
