The High Court of Cassation and Justice on Thursday admitted the cassation appeal (an extraordinary appeal) filed by Mario Iorgulescu and canceled the decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeal from October 2023 by which he was sentenced to 13 years and 8 months in prison, following that the process to be rejudged in the appeal phase.
As a result, Mario Iorgulescu (son of the president of the Professional Football League, Gino Iorgulescu, ed. n.) scrapes clear of the 13 years and 8 months sentence in prison for murder and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs (cocaine), in connection with the car accident caused by him in 2019, resulting in the death of a young man.
Initially, Mario Iorgulescu received a sentence of 15 years and 8 months at the trial court (Bucharest Tribunal), in February 2023, a sentence reduced by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to 13 years and 8 months in prison.
Mario Iorgulescu is in a private medical clinic in Italy, his parents managed to get him out of the country with a private plane, a few days after the accident. He was not heard by prosecutors or magistrates, during the criminal prosecution or the trial in court.
He was tried in absentia, and on February 10, 2023, he was sentenced by the Bucharest Tribunal to 15 years and eight months in prison for murder and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs (cocaine).
In the sentencing decision, judge Manuela Orzata from the Bucharest Tribunal mentioned that Mario Iorgulescu had discernment at the time of the accident, he did not suffer and does not currently suffer from mental illnesses that would prevent him from being transferred from Italy to participate in the lawsuit filed by the Romanian authorities, and if he has medical conditions, he can be treated without problems in the penitentiary system of our country.
