Finance minister Tanczos Barna says he will no longer hold this portfolio in the future government.
At the same time, he estimates that the package of measures meant to adjust the budget deficit will be outlined by Friday. According to him, it is not yet known who will represent Romania at the EU Finance Ministers’ Meeting (ECOFIN), but that person will present the package of measures prepared by the new coalition.
„We still don’t know who will go to ECOFIN. One thing is certain: Romania will be represented at ECOFIN by a person who, on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, will go there with the package of measures prepared by the new government coalition. (…) Our country will be represented at ECOFIN with a set of measures. The person doesn’t matter, what matters is the package and the measures proposed by the new coalition,” the deputy PM told the journalists gathered at the Victoria Palace.
He said that over the past two weeks the Ministry of Finance has formulated a series of proposals regarding tax changes and spending cuts. The package of measures, undertaken by the coalition, will be presented to ECOFIN.
„I had a fairly long discussion with the Commission representatives the day before yesterday. Yesterday, colleagues from the ministry discussed the package that is being prepared and will be presented to ECOFIN. The coalition will have to look at this package, to take responsibility for it. (…) In the last two weeks, we have put on the table all the variants, all the alternatives of tax changes, tax increases, spending cuts, solutions, which were proposed by the Commission as well. They are on the coalition table today and from this set of possible measures, the package will take shape… Today, at the latest tomorrow morning, the package will be ready,” he added.
Tanczos Barna specified that the UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) is participating in the negotiations for the formation of the future government.
