The Chamber of Deputies’ Agriculture Committee voted on Wednesday to extend the cap on markups for basic foodstuffs until the end of the year, a measure requested by Acting Minister of Agriculture Tanczos Barna.
“We requested the extension of the cap on markups for basic foodstuffs until the end of the year. The UDMR has consistently argued in recent years that, as long as high inflation continues to put pressure on family budgets, the cap on markups for basic foodstuffs must be maintained. At our proposal, the Chamber of Deputies’ Agriculture Committee voted today to extend the measure until the end of the year, rather than allowing it to expire at the end of June. Thus, capping the markup will continue to help limit price increases for basic foodstuffs (…) “I hope that the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies will also approve this extension, so that families can continue to purchase essential food products at lower prices until the end of the year,” the official wrote on Wednesday on his Facebook page.
Foods included in the category of products with price caps include: plain white bread (300–500 g), 1-liter drinking milk (1.5% fat, non-UHT), bulk cow’s milk telemea cheese, plain cow’s milk yogurt (3.5% fat, maximum 200 g), “000” white wheat flour (up to 1 kg), cornmeal (up to 1 kg), size M chicken eggs, sunflower oil (up to 2 liters), fresh chicken meat, fresh pork, fresh bulk vegetables (tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, peppers, etc.), fresh bulk fruit (apples, pears, plums, grapes), fresh white potatoes in bulk, granulated white sugar (up to 1 kg), sour cream (12% fat), butter (up to 250 g), and plum jam (up to 350 g).
