Tourist arrivals, overnight stays in Romania, up five months into 2024

Arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments in Romania, including apartments and rooms for rent, increased by 2.5% in the first five months of 2024, y-o-y, while overnight stays jumped by 2.2%, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the total reported arrivals, Romanian tourists had a share of 81.6%, while foreign visitors accounted for 18.4%.

Also, between January 1 and May 31, 2024, overnight stays at tourist accommodation establishments (plus apartments and rooms for rent) were 8.485 million, up 2.2% from the first five months of 2023. Again in this case, the largest share was held by Romanian tourists, with 79.3% of the total, with he rest up to 100% going to foreign tourists.

Y-o-y, at the end of May 2024, the average length of stay was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.

Official statistics by counties show that high numbers of tourist arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent) were reported in Bucharest (764,600 people), Brasov (544,400) and Cluj (230,600), and the overnight stays of tourists were more numerous in Bucharest (1.535 million people), Brasov (1.017 million) and Prahova (444,400).

A breakdown by county reveals that from January to the end of May this year, most arrivals of foreign tourists in Romania for accommodation at tourist accommodation establishments came from: Italy (87,600 people), Germany (78,700) and the UK ((49,000).

Arrivals of foreign visitors in Romania were 4.953 million people, with 1.909 million of them coming from other European Union countries.

In terms of departures abroad, 6.987 million Romanian visitors were registered. Most of them (68%) chose to travel by road, and almost a third (31.2%) by plane.
The INS specifies that, following Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area (sea and air), on April 1, 2024, starting with this April, as the information regarding the arrivals of foreign visitors in Romania and the departures of Romanian visitors abroad are no longer comparable with those published before March 31, 2024.
