• Transelectrica modernises Romania’s energy infrastructure: investments of nearly 129 million lei in Q1
• Transelectrica is preparing to integrate 5,000 MW of new renewable energy
The National Company for Electricity Transmission Transelectrica made investments of 128.91 million lei in the first quarter of 2026, or 14.1% of the annual investment programme and 43.5% of the budget planned for the first three months of the year.
Official data show that, of the total investments made by 31 March, 92.22 million lei represented the company’s own spending, while another 36.69 million lei were investments financed through connection tariffs, used for works requested by investors and energy producers connecting to the national grid.
Transelectrica’s total investment programme for 2026 amounts to 914.17 million lei, of which nearly 788.4 million lei are the company’s own investments.
An important component consists of projects financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), for which a budget of 141.17 million lei is provided.
The largest share of the investments made so far relates to projects already under way. These investments totalled 87.78 million lei, or more than 95% of the company’s total own spending in the first three months of the year.
Why these investments matter
For the average consumer, Transelectrica’s investments do not immediately translate into new generation capacity, but into the modernisation of the infrastructure that enables electricity to be transported safely across the entire country.
Transelectrica’s development plan for the next decade includes significant investments in strengthening energy security, digitalising infrastructure and implementing the smart grid concept (SMART GRID). These projects will make it possible both to integrate a larger volume of electricity generated from renewable sources and to increase interconnection capacity with the energy systems of neighbouring countries.
Dobrogea and Banat, the main challenges for integrating green energy
One of the major challenges facing Romania’s energy system is the limited capacity of the grid in the areas with the greatest potential for renewable energy production.
The Dobrogea and Banat regions concentrate Romania’s most important wind and solar resources. At present, the transmission infrastructure in these areas is under heavy strain and can no longer accommodate new generation capacities at the level of existing demand.
According to the company’s estimates, the investments under way and those planned by 2027 will make it possible to integrate around 5,000 MW more into the system in these two regions alone. By comparison, this capacity is equivalent to the average consumption of the capital for 3-4 days, or roughly a Sunday’s consumption at national level.
New investment contracts worth nearly 90 million lei
Between January and March 2026, Transelectrica signed several contracts for the installation of photovoltaic plants and energy storage systems at its own substations, a project financed by European funds under the PNRR, the REPower component.
The largest contract, worth 33.11 million lei, covers the installation of photovoltaic plants and storage facilities at the București Sud, Fundeni, Domnești, Gura Ialomiței and Ghizdaru substations.
A second contract, worth 29.87 million lei, was signed for the Constanța Nord, Isaccea, Lacu Sărat, Medgidia Sud and Tulcea Vest substations, essential infrastructure for evacuating the energy produced in Dobrogea.
During the same period, in the first three months of 2026, the company contracted new investment works worth 26.48 million lei for the Pelicanu, Turnu Măgurele, Stâlpu, Teleajen, Târgoviște and Brazi Vest substations.
