Tulum(Mexico): Women’s Softball in the Mayan Caribbean

There is, in the “Zona Maya” of the beautiful municipality that is Tulum, a women’s softball team. This team promotes the traditions of the Mayan culture through sport in Hodzonot, an authentic rural community located 80km from the municipality’s capital city.

The players of the “Diablillas Mestizas de Hodzonot,” dress to play in their traditional indigenous garb, the “Huipil,” which they themselves sow and design by hand. They play barefoot in the “Field of Dreams” of Hodzonot, erected amidst the majestic Mayan Jungles of Tulum.


This team, which proudly represents the Tulum municipality, has gained fame and popularity in Mexico and the world. Their unique way of playing the sport, and the setting in which they play it have inspired a change in perception not only of the sport of softball, but also of the role that women play in Mexico’s native towns.
