The Bucharest Courthouse on Thursday decided to take up a prosecutors’ request for a 30-day pre-trial arrest of two female doctors from the Emergency Clinical Hospital Sfantul Pantelimon in Bucharest accused of having caused the death of a patient admitted to intensive care by intentionally lowering the dose of norepinephrine, which maintains blood pressure.
The court’s decision is not final.
Dr M.M.A. is investigated for attempted murder -with premeditation and taking advantage of the victim’s state of obvious vulnerability – and aggravated murder – with premeditation – and Dr P.M. is investigated for aggravated murder – with premeditation.
Specifically, prosecutors claim that in March and April, the two doctors lowered the dose of the blood pressure maintainer norepinephrine to a patient admitted to intensive care, who consequently went into cardiopulmonary arrest.
Investigators determined that before the doctors lowered the norepinephrine dose for the second time, the patient’s condition had improved.
„The 54-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital on March 17, and due to his worsening health condition, he was transferred to the ICU on March 25. On March 26, the first sudden reduction in the dose of norepinephrine occurred. In the following days, the patient’s condition improved, he was even visited by family. On April 4, the second reduction of the dose of norepinephrine happened, and death occurred,” according to an official of the Prosecutor’s Office.
In the same case, a nurse from the ICU ward has been indicted for allegedly lying to prosecutors about suspicious deaths at the Pantelimon Hospital.
