The president of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, declared on Tuesday evening that, at the consultations to be held at the Cotroceni Palace, he will say „no to Romanian troops in Ukraine, at this moment”, before the conclusion of a peace agreement.
He recalled that, in recent years, such consultations „have not been, unfortunately”.
„I’m glad that Ilie Bolojan wants to consult with the political leaders, all the parties, and to have a position that can later be supported in Parliament, if necessary, and in society, because next week there is an extraordinary Council and the Council’s topics are related to the Russian-Ukrainian war”, Kelemen Hunor said on Antena 3.
Asked what his opinion would be if the interim president Ilie Bolojan raises the issue of sending Romanian peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, Kelemen Hunor replied that in the current context his answer is „categorically no”.
„There is war there, there is not even a very close perspective of an agreement that would mean peace. So, categorically, no. But, of course, if you want, we can develop what peacekeeping forces mean, why not, what are the priorities at this moment. A ceasefire is not peace, a peace agreement comes later. I am for reaching a ceasefire as soon as possible, in order to open a dialogue for peace negotiations, because you realize from the war that is happening every day, a military conflict, you will not reach a peace agreement. A ceasefire is needed, in order to open the way for diplomatic dialogue. And this does not mean that Ukraine has lost, it does not mean that Russia has won. It does not mean that, after the ceasefire, you do not have the possibility of reaching an agreement acceptable to Ukraine, because we are talking about that. But at this moment, sending troops, no,” the UDMR leader added.
He also referred to the Trump administration’s approach to foreign policy.
„We must understand history. Our history, their history. If we want to understand what is happening to the United States, we must see what the United States’ strategy is in 2025. Why are they doing what they are doing now? Is there another strategy related to China and they want to distance Russia from China? Because the great confrontation will be – and I am not talking about military confrontation, I am talking about commercial, political, of any nature, not military – in the Pacific area with China. (…) We must convince this [American] administration that under any conditions the most loyal ally for the U.S. in the medium and long term will be Europe. (…) The EU must find an alternative and rethink its strategy from an economic, military, and political point of view,” the UDMR leader also pointed out.
