UDMR’s Kelemen: Romania needs to produce energy; if motion is voted, there will be a fracture in coalition

Published on

Romania needs energy production, and the completion of the hydroelectric power plants started in 1989-1990 must be done, believes the president of the UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania), Kelemen Hunor, who added that if the simple motion filed by AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians) against the minister of the environment will receive the votes of the Social Democrats, this would create a fracture in the governing coalition.

„The minister came yesterday and participated in the coalition meeting. The discussion was a tense one, let’s say, and today we understood that the PSD (Social Democratic Party) will discuss the matter and make a decision,” Kelemen Hunor told Adevarul Live talk show.

Warned that there are parliamentarians who will vote for the motion, he indicated that this „will be a mistake”.

„Now, of course, some things depend on Mrs. Buzoianu, other things were inherited, including the hydroelectric power plants. The important thing is to see one thing: those areas can no longer be rebuilt, those investments must be completed from my point of view. Romania needs energy production,” said Kelemen Hunor.

He drew attention to the fact that many coal-fired power plants have been shut down „and nothing has been put in place.”

„We don’t have the storage capacity, everything that is green has no storage capacity and there, if there is sun, then there is production, but if there is no consumption, then you have to sell. And there is also the situation when you need energy, because there is higher consumption, and you don’t produce because the wind is not blowing, because there is no sun, because there is no storage capacity. Plus, we have stopped many coal-fired power plants, we have put almost nothing in place. At Nuclearelectrica, an investment is coming or a large investment is underway, but we are still at the beginning. So, from this point of view, hydroelectric power plants are those capacities for increasing energy production through which you can calibrate how much you produce, if you have the quantities of water in the reservoirs,” stated the president of the UDMR.

Asked whether there was any discussion about the fact that, if the motion is voted on by the PSD, the USR (Save Romania Union) is even considering leaving the government, Kelemen Hunor replied: „I don’t think we will end up in this situation, but any vote on a simple motion or a motion of censure really means a huge fracture in the coalition and it is difficult to talk about solidarity in the coalition, about cohesion in the coalition, in such situation”.

He added that currently the coalition is „up to the desired standards”.

„There are four political formations, plus the group of national minorities in the Chamber. That means five people at the table. Of course they appear,” explained the UDMR leader.

The simple motion against the minister of environment, waters and forests, Diana Buzoianu, which was debated on Monday in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, will be put to a vote on Wednesday. AGERPRES
