The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, warned on Monday that all countries must choose: either collaborate to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, or condemn future generations to a climate catastrophe, Reuters reports from the COP27 climate meeting in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el – Sheikh, Agerpres reads.
Through his speech, Guterres wanted to convey an urgency ahead of two weeks of debates on ways to avoid the worst effects of climate change, although governments are mainly concerned about the war in Ukraine, rising inflation and the crisis energetic.
„Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish,” said the Secretary General. After him, the leaders of several countries followed, from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia.
Guterres called for a pact between the richest and poorest nations to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and accelerate financing to reduce emissions, while some effects of global warming have already occurred.
