UN report: Five women killed every hour in 2021 by partners or family members

On average, five women or girls were killed every hour in 2021 by a partner or family member, in their own homes, according to a UN report published on Wednesday, DPA reports, Agerpres reads.

About 56% of all crimes in 2021 involving women and girls, 45,000 out of a total of 81,000, were committed by partners or family members, according to the report published by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). and UN Women.

Regarding the crimes that had men as victims, their percentage was 11%.

In general, the „alarmingly high” number of crimes involving women and girls has remained almost unchanged in recent years, the report states.

In addition, it is estimated that there may be a large number of unreported cases.

The two UN agencies requested better protection of women and girls. „We need a concerted effort of action on the part of society, which respects the rights of women and girls to feel safe – at home, on the street, everywhere,” said the director of UN Women, Sima Bahous.
