Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus, an independent member of the European Parliament (NI) is launching a harsh attack on the European Commission, accusing it of disastrously mismanaging the major epidemics that have struck European livestock farming and of crippling farmers across the Union through trade agreements such as Mercosur. In a speech to the plenary, Lazarus spoke of “inefficiency, a lack of solutions, and decisions that have turned Europe into a dumping ground for imports,” reports realitatea.net.
In a question posed to the relevant committee, Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI) demanded explanations regarding the lack of effectiveness in decisions made at the highest levels of European institutions and subsequently imposed on member states.
Independent Member of the European Parliament Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI): “Does this European Commission want to solve some problems related to animal diseases or not?” Lazarus asked, noting that swine fever struck first, and “it is said that there are no funds to find solutions for the eradication of this bluetongue disease.”
The MEP emphasizes that, although funds were available for African swine fever and research was conducted, “even today there is no vaccine to end African swine fever,” while the disease continues to affect several European countries, including Romania.
Lazarus claims that the effects have been devastating: “Romania has gone from being a pork exporter to a pork importer.”
Subsequently, Lazarus argued, the situation worsened with the outbreak of sheep plague, which completely blocked Romania’s exports to the European Union. In this context, the pro-sovereignty MEP questions the logic behind the decisions made by the European Commission.
“If Romania had problems eradicating swine fever because this European Commission didn’t provide any solution, and exports were banned due to sheep plague—and, after a little over a year, they’re still banned—then what is the logic behind these actions? Where is the European Commission trying to go? Does it want to destroy all farmers? Does it want nothing to be raised in Europe anymore?
Finally, independent Member of the European Parliament Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI) warns that European farmers are being left unprotected: “The European Commission has also signed the treaty with Mercosur. Does it want to bring animals into Europe only from emerging markets? We had some rules here. We followed them. Our farmers followed them. Now we’re giving up all the rules and becoming a sort of no man’s land, a playground for imports.”
