Unemployment rate in Romania rose to 3.35% in January 2026

The unemployment rate registered at the national level at the end of January 2026 was 3.35%, 0.06 percentage points higher than in the previous month and 0.01 percentage points lower than in January 2025, the National Employment Agency (ANOFM) reported on Tuesday.

The total number of registered unemployed was 268,111 people.

Of the total number of registered unemployed, 63,975 were unemployed with benefits and 204,136 were unemployed without benefits. The number of unemployed with benefits increased by 2,820 people, and the number of unemployed without benefits was higher by 1,577 people compared to the previous month.

By area of residence, the number of unemployed people at the end of January is as follows: 71,213 unemployed people come from urban areas and 195,898 unemployed people come from rural areas.

The number of unemployed women on January 31, 2026 was 128,568 people, while the number of unemployed men was 139,543 people.

Most unemployed people were between 40 and 49 years old (65,340), followed by those over 55 years old (64,863), at the opposite end were people between 25 and 29 years old (15,864).

Regarding the structure of unemployment by level of education, the unemployed without education and those with primary education have a significant share in the total number of unemployed registered in the records of the ANOFM (29.24%). The unemployed with a secondary education level represent 34.11% of the total number of registered unemployed, and those with university education 4.83%.
