Save Romania Union (USR) Chairwoman Elena Lasconi said on Monday, regarding the nomination of Roxana Minzatu as European commissioner, that she saw that the latter „is good at accessing European funds and had been European Funds minister,” but the mandate she will have is important.
„When you have weak politicians at the helm, you can’t really put your fist on the table, neither at the top level in the European Union, nor in the United States of America, you can’t negotiate. That’s what I was saying, that if we had had an involved president, if we had had a prime minister with vision, we, through our membership in the European Union and NATO and the Strategic Partnership with the United States, could have had more to gain. When the war broke out in Ukraine, we could have had money from the European Commission to build motorways, railroads, more investments in the Port of Constanta. So that could have happened, but nothing happened. Also, with visas with the United States, there are many things that could have been done better,” Lasconi told a press conference.
Asked if she thinks Roxana Minzatu would not be prepared and suitable for this position, Lasconi said, „I have seen that she is good at accessing European funds and she had also been a minister of European Funds. I don’t know what to say. The important thing is what mandate she will have. That is also important.”
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday that he would nominate Roxana Minzatu as Romania’s European Commissioner.
