The future leadership of the Save Romania Union (USR) will decide whether or not to keep its alliance with the People’s Movement Party and the Right Force, USR spokesman Ionut Mosteanu said on Tuesday.
He told a news conference that maintaining the alliance with PMP and the Right Force is „a working option that is on the table,” but that the decision belongs to the new leadership. On the other hand, he did not rule out the possibility of an expansion of the alliance.
He added that for now USR’s resigned national leader Catalin Drula and the members of the National Bureau are providing only the administrative and legal operations of the party, but that the political decisions will be taken by the future leadership.
He rejected the option of a joint USR – National Liberal Party (PNL) candidate for the presidency of Romania, given that the Liberals are at rule with the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
„It seems that this embrace of the PSD cobra has cost PNL a lot, and for three or four more MEP seats on the joint list with PSD, they lost six county councils and a few large cities that they had controlled for years,” he said.
Mosteanu said that Dominic Fritz, who successfully run for re-election as mayor of the western city of Timisoara, would be „a good option” for the USR leadership, because he is a seasoned politician and a very good branch chair.
„I know that my colleague Elena Lasconi is also considering running. She is a respected person, loved by the people, a mayor who reconfirmed her position with a crushing score in Campulung. We’ll see, maybe there are others,” he said.
Mosteanu also said that, although traditionally the party national leader runs for president, it does not have to be so.
