Designated Prime Minister Adrian Veştea reiterated on Monday that he will take over in full the government programme of the Bolojan government, without changing a single comma. He also said he will present a list of ministers, people who will have integrity and professional expertise, so that they do not have to “spend time finding their way around the offices in the ministries”.
On Monday, Adrian Veştea was asked on Radio România Actualităţi whether there is a parliamentary majority to support him or whether one will be formed following negotiations.
“Since the moment I accepted this nomination in order to form a government and subsequently continue the reforms in Romania, I have consulted with President Nicuşor Dan and Eugen Tomac, who have held consultations with the political parties and assured me that such a majority exists. I have not had any specific discussions today in any political sphere. I expect to discuss this first and foremost later today with our colleagues from the National Liberal Party, but I believe we are more aware than ever that Romania needs a government. Romania needs to be governed,” stated Adrian Veştea.
When asked if he remains optimistic that his government will be approved by Parliament, Adrian Veştea replied: “I am optimistic as long as I believe we should all demonstrate responsibility. I’ve been here for a very long time, and every time we’ve realized that people have invited one another to govern. I haven’t seen a single person who is universally accepted, and I believe that today, through what we have to do and through the responsibility entrusted to me by the President of Romania, our task is to restore functionality to the Romanian state. If we want this situation of unpredictability to persist, where costs are rising, if we see that the exchange rate is at a level it has never been before, if we fail to prioritize the national interest over personal or party interests, it means we are not moving the country forward.”
Regarding the support of PNL parliamentarians for the government’s investiture, given that there are differing opinions within the party regarding his nomination as prime minister, the prime minister-designate stated that “there are differing opinions.”
“Certainly, the president’s decision yesterday surprised many people. But I intend to see through my mandate as the person responsible for forming the government. I have a conscience, I have a responsibility to the country, and I have an obligation to do this within the course of this week. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep discussing, analyzing, or thinking about all sorts of things,” Adrian Veştea said.
He also noted that he will adopt the governing program previously proposed by Ilie Bolojan and will present a list of ministers.
“In a few days, you will see that I will adopt the Bolojan government’s program—which was agreed upon by all parties—in its entirety, without changing a single comma, and subsequently I will present a list of ministers, individuals who will possess integrity and professional expertise, so that we don’t have to spend time getting to know the offices in the ministries or figuring out what the job description for a particular ministry entails, but rather get down to work the very next day and pull Romania out of the situation it finds itself in today,” the prime minister-designate added.
