Vice President of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu said on Pro TVR, about the Digital Service Act Regulation on misinformation, that we need to improve the mechanisms, because they are not fast enough to combat this phenomenon, in the context in which most citizens access information online.
„The reality is that Romania is not prepared to deal with these types of misinformation and European action is needed. At EU level we also have a regulation, called the Digital Service Act, which basically explains how we should react as a state and how we can coordinate with European partners to come up with a rapid response to this challenge. The scale of the phenomenon is huge.
We are talking about a budgetary impact of more than €60 billion annually, which we lose at European level as a result of misinformation. The volume is exponential, we are talking about thousands of documents, thousands of pieces of information circulating online today, induced by the states you have mentioned, with the aim of disrupting the European economy and democratic stability.
In this sense, we certainly need to improve the mechanisms, because they are not fast enough to combat this phenomenon, given that the majority of citizens are accessing information online.
We have to say that many citizens, unfortunately, do not have the ability to identify the right information. European statistics show that less than half of Europeans are able to have this critical analysis, to identify the correct information, compared to false information, which means that the majority of Europeans are subject to misinformation that has serious consequences on their lives and the European economy,” Negrescu said.
