MEP Luiz Lazarus spoke in the plenary session of the European Parliament about cohesion policy. “How will this cohesion policy work in a country with a deficit that is unable to solve its problems?” asked the MEP.
„Do we here in this Parliament, every time we speak, really shape reality? Because I feel, as a member of the two committees on transport and tourism and agriculture and rural development, that for almost a year now, since I have been speaking in these committees, I feel powerless and I don’t like it.
Because Romania is the country with the largest deficit in the European Union. And as such, those who have led it so far and who continue to lead it, although not necessarily voted for by the people, want to solve this deficit by increasing VAT, by increasing fuel excise duties, which will destroy rural tourism. At the same time, for 17 years, we have not managed to build motorways. Why is that? Maybe we will succeed now with military mobility. And these things go on and on, and we get nowhere.
Basically, what cohesion policy are we talking about? How will this cohesion policy work in a country with a deficit that is unable to solve its problems? Will this money really reach the people at home, in rural areas, where there are not even roads or where there are so many problems?
