Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that he welcomes the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, adding that Kyiv is prepared to "respond in kind" if Moscow stops its attacks, according to Reuters, AFP, and EFE.
"Ukraine has always called for a ceasefire in the war waged by Russia here in Europe against our state and people, and we support the ceasefire in the Middle East and the Gulf, which paves the way for diplomatic efforts," the Ukrainian head of state wrote on X. "It is obvious to everyone that a ceasefire can create the right preconditions for agreements," he added.
Ukraine previously praised the U.S. "resolve" in targeting Iran, which is a close ally of Russia and has supplied it with thousands of drones that Moscow has used to strike Ukraine.
"American resolve is paying off. We believe it is time to show sufficient resolve to force Moscow into a ceasefire and end the war against Ukraine," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sîbiga also stated on the X platform.
Kyiv has repeatedly called on Moscow to agree to a full ceasefire in its four-year war so that the two sides can negotiate a peace agreement. Russia says it wants comprehensive terms for peace to be agreed upon before the fighting stops.
Ukraine has also sent over 200 specialists to the Middle East to help counter Iran’s drone attacks.
"Teams of Ukrainian military experts will continue to work in the region to contribute to the further development of security capabilities," Zelenskyy said.
