Wind industry and renewables, main cause of imbalance (specialist)

The wind industry and renewables in general have been singled out as the main causes of imbalances in the system, but they are also the ones that are currently suffering terribly from this aspect of the grid, which is becoming almost unbearable, said Liviu Gavrila, vice-president of the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA), at a specialist conference on Thursday.

„Recent history shows us that there is this lever of assuming certain things. Meanwhile, there have been some huge problems on the market. A dry year like this and a year without much wind has also shown us how fragile the system is, and why an integrated approach is needed. The wind industry and renewables in general have been singled out as the main culprits of imbalances, but they are also the ones that are currently suffering terribly from this aspect of the grid that is becoming almost unbearable. That is, when, in terms of integrating all types of wind energy production sources, in conjunction with the elements of transportation and consumption, we will somehow have to change the paradigm. If we continue like this, you should know that slowly but surely, some of these players that are on the market are not going to make it, because it’s impossible. The costs are so high right now in the balancing area of the market… Everybody’s looking forward to this mid-September, let’s see how July data look like. This CFD auction is coming up and we hope that the gigawatts for the wind industry will be allocated at a competitive price. Financing a wind project is far from easy,” said Gavrila.

In the opinion of the RWEA specialist, compared to 2023, the energy sector in Romania is looking „a bit better” this year.

According to him, the whole energy mix has to bring stability to the energy system, but for this the whole mechanism has to work together.

The publication The Diplomat-Bucharest organised an event dedicated to the green energy sector on Thursday, with the participation of representatives of authorities and professional organisations.
