Low-cost airline Wizz Air unveiled on Tuesday its latest generation Airbus A321neo which will serve the newly established base at the Bucharest Baneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport, flying to seven destinations, the airline announced in a statement.

An additional aircraft will also operate from the Henri Coanda Airport from August 1, taking the company’s aircraft fleet based in Bucharest to 21 this summer.

„Bucharest is of particular importance to Wizz Air, and the airline is delighted to continue its rapid expansion with these new aircraft, while offering more efficient travel options with additional seats at reduced prices for this summer season: almost 913,000 seats added to its 2025 summer schedule to Bucharest, up 22% compared to the same period last year,” the cited source says.

In addition to the existing connections to Naples (Italy), Krakow (Poland), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Budapest (Hungary) and London Luton (United Kingdom), the airline will launch two routes to Poland, from Bucharest Baneasa to Warsaw on June 8, and to Wroclaw on December 6.

Also, the new aircraft that will serve Bucharest Otopeni operations will start flying three new routes this summer: Gran Canaria (Spain) on June 17, Frankfurt Hahn (Germany) on August 1, and Friedrichshafen (Germany) on August 2. The airline will also increase the frequency of nine existing routes to Dortmund, Memmingen, Stuttgart, Nice, Basel, Madrid, Malaga, Lyon and Pisa.

„As we boast a 51% market share in Romania, we are eager to expand our network and start operating today a new base at the Bucharest Baneasa Airport. This summer, we are proud to provide an additional of almost 913,000 seats, resulting in a 22% capacity growth in Bucharest compared to last year. This marks the first step towards reaching an annual capacity of over eight million seats. Operating 67 routes to 22 countries from both Bucharest airports, we continue to grow towards our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy, supporting the Romanian economy and the local job market, while strengthening our position as the leading airline in the country,” said Wizz Air Malta CEO Mauro Peneda at the inauguration of the Bucharest Baneasa base, as cited in the release.

Since the start of its operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has constantly increased its investments. Currently, the airline operates 173 routes from 13 airports in Romania, connecting passengers to 71 destinations in 22 countries. Over the past 18 years, Wizz Air has established seven operational bases in Bucharest Baneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Timisoara, Craiova and Sibiu. The airline has over 1,500 employees in Romania.

All Wizz Air flights are operated with 180-seat Airbus A320s, 180-seat A320neos, 230-seat A321s, and Airbus A321neo aircraft with 239 seats.
