A total of 385 serious road accidents, in which 148 people died and 330 were seriously injured, occurred nationwide between January 1 and July 31, due to speeding, according to a press release issued by the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR).
Thus, 17 percent of all serious accidents were caused by speed.
„From August 5 to 11, according to the European Operations Programme 2024 of the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL), Operation SPEED, aimed at checking compliance with the legal speed limit and preventing road events caused by excessive speed, will be carried out,” IGPR informs.
Traffic police officers will give priority to detecting those who exceed the legal speed limit, using all road traffic surveillance equipment and speed measurement of vehicles in the possession of the Romanian Police.
In Romania, the maximum speed allowed in towns is 50 or 70 km/h, with the agreement of the public road administrator, respectively 90/100 km/h outside towns, 120 km/h on express roads and 130 km/h on motorways.
