President of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) Toni Grebla announced in a press conference on Tuesday that 207,389 candidates have registered for the local elections and 494 for the European Parliament elections on 9 June, mentioning that the youngest candidate is 23 years old and the oldest is 100 years old.

Toni Grebla told a press conference that so far 18,025,324 voters are registered in the Electoral Register and the number of polling stations is 18,955 in the country and 915 abroad.

According to the AEP head, 3,186 mayors and Capital mayor general, 3,186 local and county councils, as well as 33 representatives of Romania to the European Parliament will be elected in this election.

„A total of 207,389 candidates have registered for the local elections. Of these, 11,500 people are running for county councils and the General Council of Bucharest, and 11,386 candidates are running for mayor,” said Toni Grebla.

Of the 11,386 candidates registered for the mayoral posts, 9,776 are running in rural areas and 1,610 in urban areas.

In rural areas, 10.56% of the candidates for mayor are women, and 12.36% in urban areas.

The youngest candidate for the 9 June elections is just over 23 years old and the oldest, the „senior candidate,” is 100 years old.

„We also have two candidates for the local elections who are 95 years old, two candidates who are 94 years old,” the AEP head said.

494 candidates registered for the European Parliament elections, of whom 167 are women, representing 33.81% of the total, „a slightly better percentage than in the local elections,” according to Toni Grebla.

Candidates will be voted for by Romanian citizens over 18 years of age, who have reached the age of 18 even on the day of the elections and who are domiciled either in the country or abroad and have not lost their right to vote.

„We have 18,025,324 voters registered in the Permanent Electoral Register, of whom 942,730 are Romanian citizens domiciled abroad,” Grebla announced.

On the morning of 9 June, 18,968 polling stations will open in the country and a „record number” abroad – 915 polling stations – compared to around 450 in the 2019 European Parliament elections.

Regarding polling stations, Toni Grebla mentioned that the most will be in Bucharest – 1,289, followed by Iasi, Cluj, Bihor and Bacau with a number between 783 and 640 stations. The counties with the fewest polling stations are Tulcea, Covasna and Harghita, with about 200 polling stations.

Of the 915 polling stations organised abroad, most will be opened in countries where the presence of Romanian citizens is higher. Thus, 150 polling stations will be opened in Italy, 147 in the uk, 104 in Germany, 66 in France, 52 in Moldova and 48 in the United States of America.
