The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) informed that, from the beginning of the West Nile virus infection surveillance period – June 3 – until Thursday, 73 cases of West Nile virus infection were registered, of which 65 were confirmed and eight likely.

According to INSP, nine deaths were recorded as a result of West Nile virus infection, one each in Botosani, Salaj and Vrancea counties and three each in Suceava county and Bucharest.

The most cases of illness – 23 – were registered in the 70-79 age group and 19 in people aged between 60 and 69, according to INSP.

INSP makes a series of recommendations for the population – to avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothes and long pants, to use chemical repellents for mosquitoes, to prevent insects from entering the house through protective nets on the windows, to ensure the drying of puddles around the household, as well as to remove containers of stale water and household garbage.
