Environment Minister Mircea Fechet in Brasov on Monday, on the occasion of the inauguration of the third ReturRo centre, said that he hopes that by the end of the year only packaging from the guarantee and return system (SGR) will be sold in Romanian shops, stressing that 3 million recyclable packaging units are already being collected daily.
The minister explained that the beverages still sold in packaging that are not part of the SGR system are from stocks and are within the guarantee period and will have to disappear, but „there are already hundreds of millions of such SGR packaging put on the market, either in distributors’ warehouses or already on store shelves.”
„When we talk about this ReturRo centre, we are talking about newly created green jobs, millions of euros of investment in this location and, more importantly, we are talking about a trajectory that we have committed to and that is within the parameters. In the SGR system, 30,000 pieces of packaging were collected in December, 2 million in January, around 20 million in February and here we are in March, we are talking about an exponential increase – almost 80 million cans, aluminium cans and bottles. (…) We have managed to break the barrier of 3 million pieces of packaging collected per day,” announced the Fechet.
According to ReturRO CEO Gemma Webb, the Brasov centre will also serve neighbouring counties.
The investment in the entire ReturRo system, which will have 10 centres across the country, totalled 86 million euros, Webb said.
