Romania’s coal production declines 8.7pct in January 2024, imports down 48pct

Romania’s January 20024 net coal production totalled 165,700 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), down 8.7% (minus 15,700 toe) from January 2023, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Net coal imports were 6,400 toe in January 2024, down 5,900 toe (minus 48%) y-o-y.

In its latest energy balance forecast, Romania’s National Economic Strategy and Forecast Board indicates that by 2026 the dynamics of coal production and imports are expected to decrease as other energy production facilities are put into operation.

Thus, in 2024, production should decrease by 6.7% (to 2.525 million toe) and imports by 6.7% (to 195,000 toe); in 2025 by 8.6% (to 2.31 million toe) and by 4.5% (to 185,000 toe) coal production, respectively, and in 2026 by 10.2% (to 2,075 million toe) and by 2.5% (to 180,000 toe) respectively.
