PM Ciolacu is in favour of eliminating sick leave contributions for cancer patients and young mothers

Published on

Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Tuesday that he is in favour of eliminating the 10% contribution from sick leave for the chronically ill, cancer patients and young mothers, and this will most likely happen this week, by amending the law in Parliament.

The prime minister was asked what will happen to the bill on the 10% contribution on sick leave that is blocked at the Chamber of Deputies.

„First of all, I, the Government, cannot come up with something because it is a normative act, an ordinance, which has entered Parliament. I would be violating a decision of the CCR [the Constitutional Court of Romania]. It’s very clear. I am firmly convinced – my colleagues in Parliament will make a decision. On the other hand, I don’t understand what the overtaxation is. (…) Both you and I pay 10% CASS. Sick leave is an income. What I have told you very clearly is that for those with chronic illnesses, for those with cancer, for young mothers, I am totally in favour of eliminating it. I will talk to Mr. Simonis [interim president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfred Simonis – editor’s note] and we will do it very quickly, I hope this week,” said Marcel Ciolacu, at the PSD headquarters, after the meeting of the National Political Council of the Social Democrats.
