PM Ciolacu: Security developments confirm need for common defensive concept against Russian expansionist threats

Published on

Current security developments at regional and global level confirm the need for a common defensive concept in the face of threats generated by „Russian expansionist ambitions” and the aggression unleashed on Ukraine, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu said.

„Today marks 75 years since the United States, Canada and 10 European states signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, in fact, the birth of a defensive alliance, with the role of deterring any security threats and defending member states against them. With a larger number of member states now, including Romania, which only a few days ago celebrated two decades of NATO membership, this Euro-Atlantic connection provides the framework for political-military cooperation for strictly defensive purposes against threats of all kinds. By a beautiful coincidence, today marks 16 years since the first NATO Summit hosted by Romania, which became an important landmark in the history of the entire Alliance and the Eastern Flank, through the decisions made at the time,” Marcel Ciolacu said on Thursday in a post on the Government’s Facebook page.

He says that „the current security developments at the regional and global level confirm the need for a common defensive concept in the face of the threats generated by Russian expansionist ambitions and the aggression unleashed on Ukraine”.

„Being in the immediate vicinity of this conflict with no end in sight prospects, Romania benefits, as a NATO member state, from the most concrete security guarantee we have ever had and, in turn, will continue to show the same responsibility in joint efforts to prepare and defend against the challenges that the new strategic security context involves. Many happy returns, North Atlantic Alliance! Many happy returns to all member and partner states! Many happy returns, with peace and security!,” conveys prime minister Marcel Ciolacu
