Code Yellow advisory of windy spells and heavy downpours in southern Romania, southeastern Transylvania

The National Weather Administration issued on Wednesday a Code Yellow advisory of temporarily heightened weather instability, effective between April 17, 10:00 a.m. and April 18, 10:00 a.m., and covering areas in Muntenia, Dobrogea, southern Moldavia and southeastern Transylvania.

According to the forecasters, in the said interval these regions will see the wind temporarily pick up, with gusts of 60 – 70 km/h, gales, torrential showers, lightning and hail in certain places. In short intervals of time or through accumulation, the rain amounts are expected to hit 25 – 30 liters/sqm, and even 45 liters/sqm in spots.

Also, the Weather Administration issued a note warning of rainfall and lightning, effective from Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. to Thursday at 20:00 p.m.; the south-eastern half of Romania will experience periods of atmospheric instability resulting in showers, lightning, hail and windy spells.

In short time intervals or through accumulation, precipitation amounts are expected to hit 15 – 20 liters/sqm or even 30 – 40 liters/sqm in spots. On April 17, the wind will gust up to 45 – 55 km/h mainly in the southeast, then particularly in the south on April 18. Gales of over 70 km/h will sweep the mountain ridges.

The weather will cool off throughout the country, and at altitudes above 1,500 m precipitation will turn into sleet and snow.
