Necessary infrastructure not ready for Romania to reintroduce conscription, PNL’s Ciuca says

Chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Nicolae Ciuca declared on Thursday on private broadcaster Digi24 that Romania does not have the necessary infrastructure ready for the introduction of conscription in the next two years; Ciuca also remarked that „gone are the days” when forced drafting was common practice.

„In order to make military service mandatory again we need an extremely well-prepared infrastructure because you cannot rope in people to the army, those times are gone, on the one hand. On the other hand, you cannot draft them and then not tend to what a contemporary army means,” said Ciuca.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the Liberal leader said that the situation further requires measures to strengthen the defence capacity and revitalize the defence industry, adding that Ukraine does not have the capacity to support itself in this conflict.

„The president of Romania, all of us stated that Romania, in its position as a pivot country in the overall security on the eastern flank in the Black Sea region, has and continues to support Ukraine because otherwise imagine what would happen if the frontline broke, triggering a domino effect and what the effects on the Republic of Moldova would be, what if we woke up with the Russian army advancing towards the West. I don’t say towards Romania, but towards the West, because the frontline is wide,” Ciuca pointed out.

He underscored that NATO is a defensive alliance and it is not the first time that the need to defend every inch of the territory of its member countries is brought to attention.
