Gov’t proceeds to enforcement of law banning slot machines in towns with less than 15,000 residents

The government has proceeded to the enforcement of the new law that bans slot machines in towns with less than 15 thousand residents, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Tuesday, specifying that all gambling operators who don’t relocate their devices urgently will be left without license.

„We won’t tolerate any delay, because we want to quickly rid 90 percent of the country’s localities of slot machines,” Ciolacu said at the beginning of the Executive’s sitting.

On April 17 President Klaus Iohannis signed into law the bill that complements the OUG on the organization and exploitation of gambling activities, in the sense that gambling is prohibited in localities with a population of less than 15,000.

„Proof of the number of inhabitants is provided by a certificate issued by the municipality having the respective location under its authority,” the law stipulates.

Non-compliance with these provisions represents an offence that carries a fine between RON 150,000 and 200,000 and the confiscation of the amounts derived from the illegal activity.
