President of the Senate Nicolae Ciuca highlighted that Romania celebrates its 147th year of independence on Friday, May 10 marking Romania becoming part of the European civilization.
„Today Romania celebrates its 147th year of independence. The celebration of this defining moment for the existence of our state has been established on May 10, according to historical truth. On May 9 1877, the draft of the Declaration of Independence was voted by Parliament, and the next day the act was signed by Prince Carol I, producing its legal effects. Romania’s independence was obtained through the blood sacrifice of our soldiers, who fought bravely in the War of Independence. The heroes of Plevna, Grivita, Smardan, Rahova and Vidin deserve the recognition of all the generations that followed them,” wrote Nicolae Ciuca on Facebook.
He stressed, as a general, „that the intervention of our army was decisive in 1877, after repeated Russian failures against the Ottoman defensive lines”.
„Today we also remember other essential moments for our history, such as the swearing in of Prince Carol I in 1866 and the proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania in 1881. The day of May 10 marks Romania becoming part of the European civilization, the national ideal for which the generation of 1848 fought. Happy birthday, Romania! Happy birthday, Romanians,” added the Senate president.
